Nový diel nesmierne populárnej série hier GTA, ktorý by sa dal charakterizovať ako akčný simulátor života bežného gangstra. Hra sa odohráva v 90. rokoch 20. storočia v meste, ktoré svojou veľkosťou prekonáva všetky predošlé diely. Hlavným hrdinom je Carl Johnson, ktorý sa vracia do San Andreas, mesta kde vyrastal a odkiaľ pred 5 rokmi odišiel, aby mohol viesť normálny život. San Andreas je totiž mesto plné zločincov, bojujúcich gangov a skorumpovanej polície.
